Define how people are treated in employment, education and other aspects of american society. Following the civil war, congress adopted the thirteenth, fourteenth and. Fifteenth amendments to protect civil rights that the practice of slavery had violated. 13 prohibited slavery, 14 asserted the idea of civil rights much more broadly for citizens, 15 extended the right to vote to blacks. Civil rights are the rules that the government must follow in regard to the treatment of individuals when making collective decisions. Civil rights ought to be universal- all persons should enjoy them.
