Jrb"s making media - chapter 2: composing the frame (29-47) Frame defines the implied and explicit things an audience sees and hears; places a border around information to create art. Photographers freeze moments in time - representation of reality and art. A photograph is a capture of light reflected off of subjects/the objects in the image. The placement of objects, composition, contrast, balance enhance the content in an image. Frames can be any shape and sizes (big rectangles, small circles, triangles) Mass-produced content has to have a constant frame. Aspect ratio - proportions of the basic rectangle frame varies between mediums. Older tv"s have an aspect ratio of 4:3 ; hdtv"s nowadays have an aspect ratio of 16:9. Standard movie projection aspect ratio 1. 85:1. Differences in aspect ratio (especially in tv) cause trouble between mediums; 3 ways to solve issue: (1) letterboxing - maintain original aspect ratio of programming and add black bars to top, bottom, or sides of frame.
