COM ARTS 155 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Telephoto Lens, Tracking Shot, Crane Shot
Document Summary
Pictures exist in a two dimensional world defined by the y-axis (height) and the x-axis (width) Three dimensional movies or pictures have an extra axis : z-axis (depth) Media makers can create three dimensional images in two dimensional mediums through the illusion of depth by controlling the perspective of how a subject is viewed. The arrangement of the subject to the camera and the angles a subject is being captured from can change the message and create dynamic media. Wide angle distorts perspective by making background objects seem smaller and farther away -- stretching of the z-axis. Telephoto lens flattens or seems to compress the depth making objects look closer together. Deep focus gives a larger depth of field and audience will capture all of the objects in focus - third dimensional illusion is magnified with greater depth of field. Shallow depth of field will draw audience attention to focused subject - downplays 3d effect.
