Conformity - going along with peers - individuals of our own status, who have no special right to direct our behavior. Informal social control - used causally to enforce norms. Obedience - compliance with higher authorities in a hierarchical structure. Formal social control - carried out by authorized agents like police, doctors, etc. Deviance - behavior that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society. Deviance in one culture may be normal in another. Stigma - the labels society uses to devalue members of certain social groups. Individuals and groups with greatest status and power usually define what is acceptable and what is deviant. Punishment helps define what is acceptable, helps social stability. Anomie - loss of direction felt in a society when social control of individual behavior has become ineffective.
