POLS 157 Chapter Notes - Chapter NA: Western Leaders Are Promoting Dictatorship…in Egypt : Radical Change, Authoritarianism
Document Summary
Waves of political activism that peaked in the 2011 revolution have faded since al-sisi"s coup in 2013: fewer people are willing to risk the regime"s repressive tactics. Egypt"s constitution (from 2014) states that no amendments can be made to the article limiting the presidency to two four-year terms: pro-sisi forces want to change this. Parliamentary committee will review the proposed change to the term limit amendment, then a national referendum would be held: this power grab has been met with silence by western leaders. Egyptians have announced opposition to the amendment online with majority of posts from ordinary people, not high-profile activists: partially because activists have been detained, exiled or scared into submission. No one posting opposition on social media has been reported arrested or harmed but feelings of fear for safety are growing: since the coup, 60,000 people have been arrested on political grounds.
