POLS 157 Chapter Notes - Chapter NA: History of the Modern Middle East pgs. 320-325 & 341-343: Nasserism, Politics Of Iraq, United Nations Security Council Resolution 242
Document Summary
Rhetoric surrounding nasserism had promises for liberation of palestine from zionism: arab unity was conceived of as a way for them to attain the military strength needed to defeat israel. Israel was an expansionist arm of western imperialism from the arab perspective. Israel watched as the soviet union gave arms to egypt, syria and iraq. In may 1967, soviet and syrian intelligence incorrectly reported that israel was preparing a military operation against syria: nasser deployed troops to the sinai peninsula to bolster his image as a pan-arab leader. On may 30th, the king of jordan signed a mutual defense pact with egypt and the iraq. Straits of tiran government joined a few days later. Jordan attacked israel in jerusalem, only to be driven out and across the jordan river, ceding the west bank to israeli occupation. Israel then attacked syria, seizing the golan heights.
