Vermont"s judicial power is vested in a judicial system comprised of a supreme court, Superior court and others as the general assembly wishes to create them. The judicial branch is separate and distinct from the other branches. The supreme court is comprised of the chief justice of the state and four associate justices. It has appellate jurisdiction in all criminal and civil cases under the terms it specifies as long as they are not inconsistent with the law. All other state courts have original and appellate jurisdiction as provided by law. All courts except the supreme court can be divided into geographic and functional divisions as provided by law or the rules of the supreme court. Courts can exercise equity jurisdiction in civil proceedings as provided by law or judicial precedent.
