POLS 125 Chapter Notes - Chapter NA: How Republicans Went from the Party of Lincoln to the Party of Trump: Slave Power, Southern Democrats, Equal Protection Clause
Document Summary
How republicans went from the party of lincoln to the party of trump. The republican party began its existence as the anti-slavery party. It went from a racially progressive party, to one with little support from non-whites. It went from a northern only party to a majority southern party. The more slave states there were, the easier it would be for them to get their way in the senate and electoral college (1) northerners feared that this slave power would lead the south to dominate politics. In 1854 the whig party collapsed over its decision not to take a stand and the republican. Party emerged, winning a share of seats in congress. They did not want abolition or racial equality, but were opposed to expanding slave states: republican party gained strength in the north leading up to its winning of the presidency under abraham lincoln in 1860.
