PBIO 004 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Apple Scab, Pest Control, Soil Fertility

12 views2 pages

Document Summary

Apple"s adaptability to different soils and climates makes them popular: there is at least one cultivar available that is able to grow in all of the 50 states. If you have an infertile cultivar you will need three varieties near each other for all to bear fruit. With the wide range of bloom times, it is important to select cultivars that bloom at the same time as each other: they are divided into early, mid and late season. Usually bloom for about 10 days, so there can be some overlap. Because of the rootstock that a cultivar is grafted onto, some are available in all three height categories. Tree size varies with vigor of the cultivar that"s grafted onto the rootstock, soil fertility, tree age, climate and pruning. The rootstock chosen to graft the cultivar onto helps determine tree size, culture requirements, disease resistance and hardiness.
