SOCI 341 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Intersectionality, Selective Perception, Realistic Conflict Theory
Document Summary
3 book notes: 3 dimensions of prejudice, the affective dimension. The feelings and emotions people attach to groups. The scapegoat hypothesis : links prejudice to personal feelings of frustration and anger. People like looking for someone to blame for their anger and tend to go for people they see as less powerful aka minorities. In other words this is taking out feelings of anger on an innocent who has nothing to do with the cause of the anger. The authoritarian hypothesis : links prejudice to early childhood experiences produced by stern models of parenting. When some people feel powerless in their home situation, they like the feeling they get when they can assert any amount of power in an outside situation: the cognitive dimension: stereotypes. Stereotypes are ideals about the characteristics of groups that are usually generalized and exaggerated. Once learned it can drastically shape perceptions about groups.
