SOCI 120 Chapter 10: ch 10 social stratification
Document Summary
Social strati cation: a system in which society ranks categories of people in a hierarchy. Social strati cation is based on 4 principles: Children born into wealthy families are more likely to succeed then those in poorer families but not because the wealthy children are simply better. Neither the rich or the poor created social strati cation. Parents pass there social standing onto their children but some people do experience social mobility. Social mobility: a change in position within the social hierarchy (rich becoming poor & vice versa) Most people move horizontally though (switch from one job to another within the same social level) What is unequal varies (power, prestige, wealth ) Why people are unequal varies from society to society. Caste systems: social strati cation based on birth or ascription. Dominates rural india (where it is outlawed) & south africa. Closed system: allow for little to no change in social position.
