Civil society: institutionally- consists of all the social groups and social relationships in which we are embedded, qualitatively- quality of our social life. Civil society and social justice are interdependent: economy, state, civil society offer distinct conceptions of social justice. In political sphere justice is derived from somewhat different ultimate values. Social capital: membership in civic associations, trusting others, voting. Why has civil society declined: loss of values, structural transformation, range of pay inequality. People perceive their economic distress to be increasing since 1972. Friendship networks and associational memberships mediate the relationships between economic conditions and delinquent behavior. Civil society cannot ourish without economic sustenance. Putnam et al- social contract that sustains collaboration in the civic community is not legal but moral. Overall civil society declining as a direct result of economic injustice and distress.
