GEOG 131 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7.12, 2.7C: Solar Irradiance
Document Summary
Greenhouse effect- insolation delayed by interactions with earth, keeping the planet warm. Greenhouse gases- h2o, co2, ch4, n2o: can be naturally produced or by humans. Ocean acidi cation- as co2 increases, a large amount of this goes into the oceans, where it affects seawater chemistry, especially the acidity. Ocean oscillations- separate ocean basins display variations in temperature that occur over years or decades. Total solar irradiance (tsi)- cycles that in uence the sun"s total output of energy. Sunspots- dark spots that are slightly cooler than the rest of the sun. Solar ares- bursts of intense energy and matter directed into space. Sunspot number- average number of sunspots present at any time. Solar cycle- (number of sunspots) full cycle from minimum to maximum back to minimum: aka sunspot cycle.
