Document Summary

Hepatitis is a liver inflammation caused by an infectious agent. It can sometimes result in acute illness followed by destruction of functional liver anatomy, the condition is called cirrhosis. Hepatitis due to infection can cause chronic or acute disease and can lead to liver cancer. Many viruses and few bacteria can cause hepatitis but a restricted group of viruses is associated with liver disease. Hepatitis a, b, c, d and e are very diverse viruses but commonly infect the liver. Hepatitis a and e can be occasionally transmitted person to person but are more commonly transmitted by food for hepatitis a and by water for hepatitis e. The incidence of the most common forms of hepatitis a and b have decreased over the past 20 years due to vaccines. Hepatitis c has a very low rate of incidence. Infection with hepatitis b virus hbv is often called serum hepatitis because it is transmitted by body fluids or by the blood.
