BIOL 2312 Chapter Notes - Chapter 50: Reabsorption, Hydrophiinae, Cloaca
Document Summary
Chapter 50: osmotic regulation and the urinary system pt 1. Osmotic pressure is a measure of concentration difference. Osmotic movement of water goes form more dilute to less dilute. Tonicity: measure of ability of solution to change volume of cell by osmosis. Hypertonic: higher osmotic pressure total molar concentration of solute particles is greater than another solution or greater than the concentration in a cell. Put cell into hypertonic and it loses water--- shrink. Hypotonic: lower osmotic pressure total molar concentration of solute particles is less than another solution or less than that of a cell--- swell. Cell put into hypotonic and it gains water. Osmoconformers: marine invertebrates- isotonic to sea water (but some ions like mg2+ not equal) Osmoregulators- maintain constant blood osmolartiy despite different environmental concentration. Tend to lose ions-- so they have to actively transport them back into body. Fix by drinking water and transporting salt out through gills and kidneys.
