Quantitative data analysis can be descriptive or inferential. Descriptive focus is limited to the data collected on the study sample. Descriptive analysis involving one variable is called univariate analysis. Bivariate analysis pertains to relationships between two variables and multivariate analysis pertains to three or more variables. Descriptive analysis does not provide a basis for generalizing beyond our particular study. The first step in quantitative data analysis is coding. Coding involved assigning separate code numbers to each category of each variable in the study. After the data are transformed into quantitative codes, researchers need to enter the data into a computer. The next step is the elimination of coding and data entry errors. Univariate analysis looks at only one variable at a time. When we look at the relationship between two variables, we are conducting a bivariate analysis. Effect size a term for various statistics that portrays the strength of association between variables.
