GEO 303 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Close-Packing Of Equal Spheres, Pyrite, Biotite
Document Summary
Earth is made mostly of rocks: rocks are aggregates of minerals. Crystal: corresponding faces of different crystals of a mineral all intersect at the same angle. Probing crystals with x-rays: crystals are internally ordered, and x-rays are waves, this was found when first pitting a crystal through the x-ray process. X-rays creates a symmetrical pattern of spots on a photographic film after passing through the substance. Spots on either side of the central vertical line are likely to correspond. They are arranged symmetrically about the central point of the pattern. In order for an x-ray to be reflected out of a crystal, it must enter through a certain angle. X-rays can be used to identify crystals as the calculation for the x-ray"s reflection will match up with a database of identified crystals. Unit cells: with the benefit of x-ray, we can identify each block as a unit cell.
