Ruler has explicit authority to establish laws and also enforce them by the use of of a standing army. Stratification of classes - farmers, craftsmen and then rulers and priests. Organization is at local level - concentrate on sites. Cave - occupied for long time and lots of activity. Open - shorter periods of time and deposits may have suffered greater erosion. Careful excavation is needed to study the sites. Identify centers of the site - by size or location. Also look at artifacts they were buried with. Using present societies and looking at the past and making comparisons and conclusions. Archaeology of the individual and of identity.
