Document Summary

Stress - force per unit area applied to a material. Resolved into 2 components: normal stress (perpendicular to cut surface, shear stress (parallel to cut surface) N = internal normal force where a = area of cross section. Av = average intensity of internal force distribution: normal usually reported as tensile (t) or compressive (c) not positive/negative. Tensile stress normal stress that pulls the imaginary surface away from the material. (acts in direction of the outward normal) Compressive stress normal stress that pushes the imaginary surface into the material. (opposite to the direction of the outward normal to the imaginary surface) Axial stress normal stress acting in the direction of the axis of a slender member. Bearing stress compressive normal stress that"s produced when one real surface presses against another. Shear stress stress resulting from the application of opposing forces parallel to a cross- sectional area of a body.
