Perception- experiences resulting from stimulation of senses. Chapter 3 notes: can change based on information available, can be similar to reasoning based o perceptual rules . Inversion projection problem- task of determining the object responsible for an image on the retina: easy for humans, difficult for computers. Humans can easily recognize blurry/partially covered objects but computers cannot. Viewpoint invariance- ability to recognize an object from different viewpoints. Bottom-up processing- events from eye to brain, starts with receptors being stimulated. Pain can actually vary based on expectations, attention, and distractions. Placebo-pill without active ingredients that can actually cause relief (placebo effect) Hermann hemholtz realized that the image on a retina is ambiguous. Apparent movement- movement isn"t happening, but is perceived. Regularities in the environment- frequently occurring environmental characteristics, thought to influence perception: example: blue= sky, green and smooth = landscapes, physical regularities- regularly occurring environmental physical properties. Example: more horizontal and vertical in world than oblique.
