PSYC 301L Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Edgar Adrian, Camillo Golgi, Golgi'S Method
Document Summary
Cognitive neuroscience-study of the physiological basis of cognition. Need both behavioral and physiological experiments to understand the mind: levels of analysis- topic can be studied in different ways in order to understand. Nerve net- network thought to be continuous for conducting signals: found by staining brain tissue, appeared continuous because of inaccurate staining methods. Camillo golgi used silver nitrate to stain and could better see neuron structure. Ramon y cajal used a golgi stain on newborn animals: saw nerve net is not continuous but made up of connected individual units, neuron doctrine- individual cells transmit signals in the nervous system. Dendrites- branch out from cell body, receive signals. Axons/nerve fibers- transmit signals to other neurons. Synapse- gap between one neuron"s dendrite and another"s axon. Neurons are only connected to other specific neurons: neural circuits. Receptors-neurons specialized to pick up information: have axon and specialized receptors.
