BISC 121Lg Chapter Notes - Chapter 25: Lipid Bilayer, Radiometric Dating, Geologic Record
Document Summary
There are four main stages that led to life. Oparine and haldene both suggested that the early atmosphere was reducing and energy came from lightning/uv radiation: ocean was a primitive soup , this was tested by miller and the conditions produced amino acids and other organic compounds. There is some evidence towards a non-oxidizing/reducing environment made primarily of nitrogen and carbon dioxide: experiments have produced organic molecules. Hydrothermal vents- areas on the ocean floor where heated water and minerals go from the earth"s interior to the ocean: may have been where organic compounds were first formed. Alkaline vents- release warm water with high ph: may have been more suitable for the origin of life. Abiotic synthesis of organic molecules is possible under various conditions. Meteorites could be a source of organic molecules. Self-replicating molecules and source of building blocks may have originated in protocells: may have happened in vesicles.
