PSC 113 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Moral Authority, Only Won, Defensively Equipped Merchant Ship
Document Summary
Campaigns and elections lend moral authority / legitimacy to institutions and laws passed so people accept those. Kennedy carried 12 states by 3% points or less and won popular vote because nyt ran premature headline that kennedy won, but the winners weren"t known till next day. More ideologically extreme than general election voters. Selection controlled by party insiders, strengthening them. Lbj almost lost and dropped out so mccarthy wins. Mccarthy: anti war with no party leaders. Robert kennedy declares also antiwar runs against mccarthy since lbj dropped out. Humphrey declares (was lbj"s vp) pro war, but too late to get on ballot in some primaries. 80% of votes went to antiwar candidates. Democratic convention: humphrey wins only 13 states with primaries. Carter won after nixon watergate scandal 1976. Some power back to democratic party leaders. ~20% of all democratic delegates (1 out of 5) Rank file used 1972 to nominate mcgovern who lost in landslide against nixon.
