Developed strong right hand percussive picking style. Recorded with eddie lang guitarist and ***violinist joe venuti. Born in nyc he was self-taught, composer, arranger and instrumentalist. Writing for major bandleaders like henderson, charlie johnson, and mckinney"s cotton pickers he took over in 1931. Played alto sax, trumpet, clarinet, tenor sax, soprano sax, piano. With johnny hodges he established the alto sax as major jazz instrument.
