If dialects of the same language diverge enough, they may become separate languages. In written language, dialects are not so apparent. Idiolect - an individual"s unique form of spoken language. Mark us as separate and unique speakers. Speech is not the only way to use language. Cats = cat + s two morphemes. Catlike = cat + like two morphemes. Lexicon - list of morphemes in a language. Each word is made up of one or more morphemes.
