Until the civil war, money was still recorded in shillings, pounds, and pence. Island was isolated well into the twentieth century. 1710: all forty-eight major families on the island had arrived by this point. Family members tended to settle near one another. Many people did not travel throughout the island much before automobiles. It was a full day"s journey from edgartown to up-island. Many people did not even travel to adjacent towns it could still be a day"s trip without an automobile. Down-island had attractions, shops, medical and legal services, and the ferry. People were more likely to marry individuals from their town or adjacent towns. In new england, it marrying first-cousins was permitted. A lot of this interbreeding occurred on the island.
