• Culturally Competent Care: older adults
o Ethnnogeriatric
▪ Specialty area of providing culturally competent care to older adults
▪ Support for older adults of racial or ethnic minority is most frequently found in family,
religious practices, and isolated geographic or community ethnic clusters
o Ethnic populations face unique problems
▪ Physical safety and crime may be a concern
▪ May have disproportionally lower income and may not be able to pay medicare
deductibles or drugs needed to treat chronic illnesses.
▪ We need to assess older adults ethic and culturally background
• Social support for older adults
o Three levels
▪ Family members are the primary and preferred providers
▪ A semiformal level of support is found in clubs, religious faith based organizations,
neighborhoods etc.
▪ Older adults may be linked to formal systems of social welfare agencies, health
facilities, and government support
o Family Caregivers
▪ Assistance with ADLs and IADLs
▪ Care for adults over the age of 65
o Elder Mistreatment
▪ Intentional acts of omission or commission by a caregiver or trusted other that cause
some form of harm to a vulnerable older adult
▪ Women are the majority of the victims
▪ Hidden problem
o Risk for EM
▪ Physical or cognitive dysfunction that leads to an inability to perform ADLs
▪ Any psychiatric diagnoses
▪ Alcohol abuse
▪ Decreased social support
o Types of EM
▪ Physical abuse
▪ Neglect
▪ Psychological abuse

▪ Financial abuse
▪ Violation of personal rights
