Chapter 6- Interviewing Skills: A clinical Art and Science
• Every encounter between a patient and a nurse begins with the establishment
• of the roles each will play during the encounter
• Becoming a patient is a curious and often dehumanizing experience.
• How to set Goals:
o Define the nurses role to the patient
o Explore the patients needs, concerns, priorities, and abilities
o Set realistic, measurable, and achievable goals with the patient
o Ensure that patients understand their care
• The Role of Student Nurses
o It is important for nurses to project confidence and honesty so that patients
feel safe and cared for, and believe they can trust their nurses.
• Active Listening
o interactive process between the nurse and the patient to understand and to
be understood
o involves the nurse carefully hearing the patient’s message, understanding, The
meaning of the words, and providing feedback
• Barriers to Active listening
o The setting and timing of an interaction, as well as anxiety levels in the patient or
nurse, can impede active listening and effective communication.
• Silence
o Allow dissipation of emotion
o Convey a respectful presence
o Allow active listening
o Acknowledge a powerful message
o Permit careful composition of responses
• Restatement:
o Initial response that involves paraphrasing what was said. Used sparingly,
restatement acknowledges that the listener has heard what was said and is useful
when beginning an interview and allows patients to clarify or expand on
information
• Reflection
o Involves restating what was said and also reflecting the emotional
undertones.
• Clarification
o utilizes simplification and summarization to make clear, concise statements
about the patient’s experience
• Patient Centered Interviewing
o Actively engaging the patient in the interview through the use of accurate
assessment of patient verbal and nonverbal behavior and appropriate questions
will improve the relationship and the information gathered during the interview.
