Tissue: a mass of similar cells and ell products that forms a discrete region of an organ and performs a specific function: four primary tissues are: Muscular: epithelial and muscular tissues are closely packed, matrix barely visible, matrix contains fibrous proteins and ground substances (extracellular fluid, interstitial fluid, or tissue fluid. Fixative: a chemical such as formalin that prevents decay and makes tissue more firm: used to preserve specimens. Anatomical structures: longitudinal section: long way, cross section: perpendicular, oblique section: between longitudinal and cross section. Smears: tissue is rubbed or spread across the slide rather than sliced. Spreads: tissue is laid out on the slide. Serve to anchor an epithelium to the connective tissue below it. Regulates the exchange of materials between the epithelium and the tissues below.
