Instinctual drives produce psychic energy: psychic energy constantly wants release . Three types of mental events: conscious. Mental events in current awareness: preconscious. The ego: develops second, after the id, operates primarily at the conscious level, reality principle, executive of personality . The superego: the moral part of personality, contains the traditional values and ideals of family and society, strives to control the impulses of the id and for moral perfection.
