Jails and prisons: back in the day, if you were found guilty of a crime, you would pay a fine, be humiliated in public, whipped/tortured and released, or executed. Locking up people in boxes was a new idea. We no longer place offenders in isolation (only for the most dangerous criminals): however, throwing the bad guys in jail led to overcrowding, but that meant cheap labor. Contrast jails and prisons: monty has been charged with arson and is waiting for his trial to begin. Unfortunately, he cannot post bail and so he remains incarcerated until his court date (jail: wanda was found guilty of killing someone who "looked at her the wrong way. " The judge sentenced her to 20 years behind bars (prison: damon gets into a fight with a bouncer at a night club. He knocks the bouncer unconscious as he is being escorted out. The police arrest him and take him into custody.
