Taming the city: industry and the growth of cities. Poverty, lack of medical knowledge, and deadly overcrowded had existed for centuries in urban life. The industrial revolution just showed these more obviously than earlier. As industry grew, there was a rapid expansion of already deadly overcrowded and unhealthy cities. England"s population went from 1. 5 million in 1801 to 6. 3 million in 1851 to 15. 6 million in 1891; other countries followed this pattern. Every scrap of land was used, no backyards, just row upon row of houses, people lived in one room houses with 6-10 people. Privies were shared by sometimes 200 people, they would overflow and seep into cellar dwellings, some courtyards became dunghills. The tremendous pressure of more people and the total absence of public transportation was the cause of this-people had to walk to jobs, and thus had to crowd in closer: the advent of the public health movement.
