Compound word- word created as a result of compounding; usually a noun, verb, or adjective. The rightmost morpheme determines the category of the word. Head- morpheme that determines the category of the word. Compounding can be done on top of derivation. In compounds there is stress on the first part of the word as opposed to noncompounds where the second part is stressed. Ex) gr enhouse as opposed to green ho se. Tense and plural markers are usually attached to the second part of the compound. Endocentric compounds- compounds that are subtypes of the head. Exocentric compounds- compounds where the meaning is different from the head. Ex) redhead- means person with red hair and not a head that is red. Inflection- changing a word"s form to indicate grammatical information. Stem- base that an inflectional affix is added to. Examples of inflection in english are am-was, come-came.
