CHEN 3101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Joule, Net Force, 2 On
Document Summary
The study of newton"s motion laws are the central con- cept of a sub eld of mechanics called dynamics. Its study object are the why of motion - that we will identify as forces - and how they relate to the actual mo- tion shown by a given body. Forces and the kinematic variables position, velocity, and acceleration are vectors and not just ordinary numbers. They have a magnitude and direction that we need to rep- resent properly. The study of bodies in motion started in the seventeenth century, with the introduction of newton"s motion laws. Although they are quite useful in a variety of contexts, there are some restrictions that you should be aware of: bodies moving at high speeds close to the speed of light. This type of problems belongs to another eld of physics called special theory of relativity: bodies whose dimensions and mass are too small, such as atoms, electrons and positrons.
