Symptoms begin immediately after traumatic event, and last for less than a month. Symptoms may begin either shortly after traumatic event or months or years afterward. Avoid activities, thoughts, feelings or conversations that remind them of the event. People feel detached from other people, lose interest in things that used to bring them enjoyment, dissociation/ confusion / memory loss. Overly alert, easily startled, trouble sleeping, guilt for surviving or what they had to do to survive. People with these disorders may also experience a depressive, anxiety,or substance use disorder,or even become suicidal. Women are twice as likely as men to experience these disorders, low income twice as likely as high income. Disasters (car crashes, plane crashes, natural disasters) Abnormal activity of the hormone cortisol and neurotransmitter nerepinephrine in urine, blood saliva of trauma victims. More anxious before event, more anxious after event. Hispanic americans most common to experience ptsd.
