Document Summary

Baroque- a period term used by art historians and musicologists. The time of belief in the divine right of kings, that the right of kings to rule was absolute: because they were chosen by god. There was a duality of thinking: pomp and extravagance, system and calculation. Art was to impress and stupefy: because of this, louis xiv built the most enormous palace in history, versailles, with over three hundred rooms. Scales were tuned or tempered so for the first time all twenty-four major and minor keys were available to composers: evident in bach"s the well-tempered klavier. The eighteenth century was also a great age for the crafts: stradivarius violin making, chippendale furniture, paul revere silver. Many baroque composers saw themselves as servants with masters to satisfy this is why many baroque pieces do not seem especially individualized in their expression.
