M-I-ENG 230 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Kelvin, Celsius, Control Volume
Document Summary
Thermodynamics is a very important field of study. Improvement in this area has indirectly lead to advancement in other fields. The first step in solving a thermodynamic problem is to analyze the situation and to identify the system. It can be anything from a closed container to an engine. We define the system according to our convenience, depending on what we want to find. Everything outside the system, i. e. not part of the system, is called the system"s surroundings. The system and its surroundings are distinguished by a boundary which is sometimes also called control surface. The boundary may be fixed or in motion. Interactions between the system and the surroundings take place across the boundary. There are mainly two kinds of systems closed systems and open systems. In a closed system the quantity of matter if fixed. It is also called a control mass system. A special case of closed system is an isolated system.
