Document Summary

Module 4. 1: tissue samples are fixed, sliced and stained for microscopy. Microscopy allows us to study tissue structure. Module 4. 2: epithelial tissue covers body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands. Epithelial tissue: a sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity. Covering and lining epithelium forms the outer layer of the skin. Glandular epithelium fashions the glands of the body. Apical surface not attached to surrounding tissue and is exposed to either the outside of the body or the cavity of an internal organ. Basal surface attached to the underlying connective tissue. Microvilli fingerlike extensions of the plasma membrane. Basement membrane located in between epithelial and connective tissue that reinforces the epithelial sheet and helps it resist stretching and tearing. Simple epithelium consists of a single cell layer, typically found where absorption, secretion and filtration occur.
