KIN 270 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Radiant Energy, Kinetic Energy, Relative Atomic Mass
Document Summary
Module 2. 1: matter is the stuff of the universe and energy moves matter. Matter: anything that occupies space and has mass. The mass of an object is equal to the actual amount of matter in the object. Matter exists in solid, liquid and gas states. Gas ex: the air we breathe in. Energy: the capacity to do work, or to put the matter into motion. Has no mass, does not take up space and is only measureable by its effects on matter. Ex: a push on a swinging door sets it into motion. Potential energy: stored energy, inactive energy that has the potential or capability to do work but is not presently doing so. When potential energy is released, it becomes kinetic energy. Matter is the substance and energy is the mover of the substance. Chemical energy: the form stored in the bonds of chemical substances. Most useful form of energy in living systems.
