Document Summary

Speciation: the process that produces new and distinct forms of life. Consider an advantageous mutation in one individual of a species. That individual and the offspring will have complete advantage over other members of the population, and the mutation will increase in frequency until it reaches 100% Migration among populations causes the mutation to spread further until all individuals within the species has it. (it spreads within the species, but not beyond it) Species: represents a closed gene pool, with alleles being shared among the members of that species, but not members of another. (not an official definition) Most generally accepted definition of species is: (bsc- biological species concept) Groups of actually or potentially interbreeding populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups. A horse and a donkey could mate, producing a mule, but this mule (a hybrid) would be infertile and therefore a genetic dead end.
