Chapter 15: intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder. Three major criteria: deficits in intellectual functions, deficits in adaptive functioning, onset before age 18. Iq score of approximately 70 or below is the cutoff for an intellectual disability. Mean iq of 100 and standard deviation of 15. Flynn effect: iq scores are increasing over the years. Controversies as to whether intelligence tests are culture fair/have culture bias. Lower iq associated with poverty, and a disproportionate number of blacks and latinos in the us are poor. Conceptual skills: focus largely on community self-sufficiency including communication, self-direction, and health and safety. Social skills: focus on understanding how to behave in social situations. Practical skills: tasks of daily living like self-care, home living, and work. Vineland adaptive behavior commonly used to measure social intelligence. Alfred binet and simon developed first successful intelligence test in 1905. Wechsler"s tests came later, and continue to dominate contemporary intellectual assessment.
