PSYCH 111 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
Hypothesis : we have emotional responses because we have been conditioned to respond emotionally to certain stimuli that we encounter. Behaviour is generated outside the person through various environmental/situational stimuli. Subject was 9 month old orphan, albert. Tested stimuli (rat) to make sure he showed no response to it in comparison to other similar stimuli (other stuffed animals) > a neutral stimuli. The unconditioned stimulus (stimulus that he did not have to learn a response to) was making a loud sound > bc everyone gets scared by that. Whenever albert reached for the rat, they would make a loud noise, so after 7 times of this, he got scared whenever he saw the rat. To test for generalization (if the response would transfer to other objects) they tested him with other similar neutral stimuli like a white rabbit. He was scared of the rabbit as well, showing generalization. After a month of no conditioning, he remained afraid.
