Theory: educated supposition about a relationship among phenomena, derived from observation, experimentation and reflection. Hypothesis: prediction based on a theory or speculation of experiment outcome. Independent variable: the treatment manipulated by the researcher: dependent variable: the outcome, research hypothesis: makes a prediction regarding relationship between variables, null hypothesis: makes prediction regarding lack of relationship. Inferential statistical tests examine the viability of the null hypothesis. Description: lowest level, simply describes what is going on. Prediction: relationships among variables are identified, prediction is possible.
