Considered the most respected and famous african american in the us in the. Was a slave but escaped to freedom in 1837. Wrote a famous autobiography narrative of the life of frederick douglass. Taught himself how to read and write. Pre-reading: frederick douglass first learned the alphabet by his master"s wife. He learned most of his reading from the columbian orator which he loved but exposed an ugly truth about slavery and the hypocrisy of it (pg 24). He used multiple strategies in trying to learn how to read and write knowing that education would help him escape slavery. He emancipated himself from slavery and became the most famous african american in the country. This statement is brought up first because it is not the main idea of the text, it is more of a result of the main idea, which was learning how to read. Douglass lived in his master hugh"s family ~ 7 years.
