Document Summary

Originally made to represent patterns observed in chem properties of elements. Johann dobereiner - found several groups of 3 elements that have similar properties (ex: chlorine, bromine, iodine) - called these triads. John newlands - elements should be arranged in octaves . Present form of periodic table: julius lothar meyer and dmitri ivanovich. Mendeleev left gaps in his periodic table but made predictions of those unknown elements" properties - many of these proved to be very accurate. Mendeleev corrected many values for atomic masses. Quantum mechanical model of atom - show how electron arrangements in hydrogen-like atomic orbitals of various atoms account for organization on periodic table. Main assumption here = all atoms have same type of orbitals as hydrogen. Aufbau principle - as protons are added one by one to the nucleus to build up the elements, electrons are also added to these hydrogen-like orbitals.
