Document Summary

Reading #20-21- 19. 1: chromatin to mrna in eukaryotes. Gene regulation in multicellular eukaryotes leads to cell specialization. Gene expression can be influence by chemical modification of dna or histones. Chromatin is a complex of dna, rna, and proteins that gives chromosomes their structure. Modification of c bases, changes to histones, & alteration in chromatin structure are epigenetic changes. Epigenetic modifications are not changes to actual dna sequence, can affect gene expression, can be inherited through mitotic cell division, often reversible. Transcription if a key control point in gene expression. Transcriptional regulation refers to the mechanisms that regulate whether or not transcription occurs. Points of regulation: at recruitments of gtfs and rna pol complex, regulated by regulatory transcription factors. Rna processing is also an important point for gene regulation. Primary transcript undergoes several modifications through rna processing: 5" cap, poly-a tail.
