BIOLOGY 105 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Magnesium, Spinach, Skeleton
Document Summary
Minerals are inorganic compounds that are necessary in one s body to facilitate normal chemical reactions and bodily functions. Major minerals are needed in larger amounts, while minor (or trace) minerals are needed in very small amounts: name the two minerals that have major structural roles in the body. Calcium has a large role in the skeletal system- it is used to build bones and teeth. Magnesium also helps build strong bones, but is also involved in extracting energy from carbs, proteins, and fats. 50-60% of magnesium is found in bones, and over 300 enzymes require magnesium as a cofactor: look over the bar graph nutrient report. Review the textbook chapters (13 and 14) and note which foods you can add to your diet to get the recommended amount for each mineral, for which you are below the rda. I am below the target for calcium, copper, iron, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, and zinc.
