The reason for this is that nyc is compact the population density is more than. Dense cities are the way to go. A city with a harbor that doesn"t allow it to grow. Street plan is for accessibility rather than design, so it keeps things close together. Cars could not be fit in the the nyc lifestyle that had formed by then. Expansive avenues for cars, widely separated buildings. To help reduce fossil fuel consumption, need to get out of cars and into public transportation. City/ gov has to stop building more roads when traffic increased, this just makes automobile life easier. Slowly being taking way traffic lanes and parking spots so that driving becomes less appealing and public transportation becomes more appealing.
