ARCH 357 Chapter Notes - Chapter of: Ipanema
Document Summary
Rio is beautiful and looking from the coastline of ipanema beach it looks perfect until you spot the collection of shantytowns, favelas(slums), that usually have no sewage system nor any electricity. Every city according to plato is split into 2 cities, a city of rich and a city of poor. Many people wish to limit the growth of slums yet they fail to understand the importance of them. These places do not represent weakness but urban strength. Cities attract poor people not develop them because they offer a better future. Should worry about places that do not attract the poor, because there is a reason they do not attract the poor. Not having a poor population indicates an issue with that area, whether it be overpriced housing or bad public transportation. Cities that have available jobs also attract the poor. Rural areas are the worst for poverty. Poor people in cities are also happier.
