Clj 240 chapter 1 the study and scope of justice administration. Purpose of studying justice administration: administration is a science that can be taught. Is the criminal justice system a system or: cjs attempts to decrease criminal behavior though a wide variety of uncoordinated and sometimes uncomplimentary efforts, system components: Corrections: each has some level of responsibility and discretion for dealing with crime, at some level a component can and will fail. This causes friction, conflict, and poor communication among different components dealing with crime: examples of issues. The police are supposed to arrest suspected offenders. Typically they are not judged by the public on the quality of arrests, but on the quantity. Prosecutors are judged by winning cases; but due to poor quality of police arrests and paperwork winning cases becomes more difficult. Defense attorneys are judged by success in getting charges dropped. Corrections have to balance punishment with rehabilitation while also dealing with overcrowding and deplorable conditions.
